Notes
- In October 2014 the former De Niro's Nightclub and all it's
subsidary rooms were put up for sale for £2.1m - so at this
point-in-time we wait with baited breath to see what next will
appear on this grandiose site.
- more details in the Newmarket Journal
- Referring to the above picture, although the present 'Doric' building
extends over the whole of No.146
& 148 High Street, originally there were three buildings on this
site.
If you look at the photo 'The Memorial Hall c. 1920' in the photos section below, the building that had been Botwood & Egerton and before that Lowther House had been demolished. The central entrance into the livery yard was still there, but the right-hand building had become part of the grounds of the recently built King Edward VII Memorial Hall - No.144 High Street.
-
The Doric Cinema
- The Doric Cinema was designed by Edgar J. Simmons and opened on 1st March
1937 with 1,124 seats and a stage 36 feet deep and 6 dressing rooms.
It was operated by a local independent company - Doric Cinema (Newmarket) Ltd., and closed on 27th July 1964.
Other cinemas designed by Edgar J. Simmons include:-- the Grade II listed Odeon at Barnet - http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/14114, http://www.arti-fact.com/architect/3048
- the Palace Cinema at Letchworth - http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/48411
- the Hertford County Cinema - http://www.ourhertfordandware.org.uk/page_id__109.aspx
- the Hermitage Hitchin
'A boldly projecting semi-circular bay is set well off-centre, containing the entrance in a recessed colonnade with coupled Doric columns.'
These columns are clearly what gave the Doric its name.
- After it closed the Doric was unused for about 15 years until the Cabaret Club opened in 1979. It went on to become at ground level a pub called the Orange House around 2000,
Millionaires in 2010
and was then renamed Pacino's Grill in 2012.
The upper floors are occupied by De Niro's nightclub; which has a capacity of 1,500, 5 bars, 4 floors, 3 dance floors and 2 separate music rooms.

THE SPEED OF MOTOR CARS
Evening Star: March 30th 1903
At Ipswich court today, before the Mayor (W.J. Catchpole Esq.) and other Magistrates,
Mr. Reginald Egerton (of the firm of Botwood and Egerton, Motor Engineers, Carr Street) was summoned for driving a motor car at more than 12 miles an hour.
When asked how he knew the car was travelling too fast, Police Constable Frederick James replied: "I hadn’t a stop watch or anything of the kind but I never saw a motor car go through the streets like it before."
Mr. H. Binks, landlord of the Marsh Tavern estimated the speed at 20 miles an hour. He went on to say that he waited to see if the car came back and held up his hand for it to stop.
The driver did stop and said to him, ‘Well, what is it?’
Witness replied, ‘you have run over my dog.’
Defendant said: ‘no I haven’t, your dog ran under my motor car.’ (laughter)
A further witness, Edward Pyman, coach trimmer, claimed to be somewhat of a judge of pace.
He was an old pedestrian and had seen ‘a lot of racing and some fast trotters in his time.’
In his defence, Mr. Egerton claimed as his car was only in third gear there was no way he could have been travelling at the speed some of the witnesses claimed. No driver, he asserted, would ever dream of going so fast as that, because of the strain it would put on the engine.
The bench found him guilty and imposed a fine of £2, with £1 8s 6d costs.
- Botwood & Egerton had garages at both Ipswich and Newmarket -
the company was dissolved on 17th
February 1910.
-
Lowther House
- Prior to Botwood & Egerton, this part of the site was Lowther House, which
was built by Viscount Lowther - William Lowther, 2nd
Earl of Lonsdale. As detailed in the deeds for the White
Lion - No.216 High Street, he acquired this piece of land on which the
house was later built on 16th January 1812.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Lowther,_2nd_Earl_of_Lonsdale - The Lowther family, Earl of Lonsdales, all had strong associations
with Newmarket going back to the 17th century - for many generations
they imported eastern blood and owned some of the early equestrian
bloodlines:-
- Lowther's White Legged Barb, 1685
- Lowther's Bay Barb, 1690
- Lonsdale's Grey Arabian, 1715
- Lonsdale's Arabian, 1720
- Lonsdale's Bay Arabian, 1720
- Lowther's Arabian, 1725
- Lonsdale's Black Arabian, 1725
- In later generations another family member; Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale
also owned No.119 High Street -
Lushington House, and No.121 High Street - Clifton House.
- Just behind this site (on the other side of Fitzroy Street), Lowther Street, built in 1897,
was also named after the Lowther family.
- As the result of some details declared in an infamous court
case it's known that in 1888 Lowther House was owned by the Jockey Charlie
Wood, and at the same time he also owned No.82
High Street - the Greyhound Hotel and No.77
High Street - the Black Horse Hotel
-
In in the 1891 census Lowther House was occupied by Jane Aldcroft - 'lodging
house keeper for race-weeks'. Jane was the widow of jockey Thomas Aldcroft who'd
died
on May 4th 1883. Previously she'd been living with Thomas next door
in the financier Sir Ernest Cassel's Grafton House
- No.144 High Street.
Jane (nee Cartwright) was the daughter of John Cartwright and Helen Dawson, sister to the famous Dawson brothers, racehorse trainers.
Jane remarried to trainer / veterinary surgeon Frederick (Fred) William Day and can be seen living here on the 1901 census with Fred's trainer son Reg and her nephew Joseph Cartwright, his assistant trainer.
Newmarket Journal 15th January 1898
Marriages
Day - Aldcroft. - January 12, at St. Martin's Church, Exning (by licence), by the Rev. Arthur Vaile, vicar, Mr Frederick W. Day, trainer, Newmarket, to Mrs Aldcroft, Lowther House, Newmarket.
- Many thanks to Geoffrey
Woollard for the above newspaper articles.
Chilli Hut - 2014 |
Previously in 1894 Sir Ernest Cassel had
commissioned the building of Moulton Paddocks and set-up Fred Day as
his trainer there after Fred's return from Australia.
A full story about Fred and his famous trainer son Reg Day can be
found on the page for Terrace House
- No.125 High Street.
In 1906 Lowther House was demolished to make way for the Botwood &
Egerton motor garge and by the 1911 census Fred, his family and his new wife Jane had moved across the road to
Terrace House
- No.125 High Street.
The building that was Botwood
& Egerton didn't last long
though, as soon after 1911 it was demolished to become part pf the
site of the new King Edward VII
Memorial Hall - No.144 High Street.

James Francis Deeks and Charles Deeks & Sons - the coachbuilders
- The son of James Deeks and Christian, James Francis Deeks was born in
Tuddenham, near Barton Mills in 1815. He married Sarah Saunders in
Cambridge in 1839 and can be seen in
the 1851 Gardner's Directory at the Victoria Inn in Exning Road.
Then in the 1855 White's Directory he'd started his coachmaking company in Mill
Hill and by the 1861 census his business had moved to this site.
His son Charles started his career as the inn keeper at the Three Tuns in Market Street.
James died on 29th July 1872 and his widow Sarah carried on the business. Charles also followed in his father's footsteps, being listed as a coachbuilder while still living and working at the Three Tuns.
By 1881 Charles moved from the Three Tuns into Aston House - No.180 High Street, on the corner of Grafton Street (Black Bear Lane). Living to the age of 90 his mother Sarah died on 30th January 1902 and Charles moved here to live in the private house as shown in the site picture above. The coachbuilding business seems to have finished trading by then though as Beales & Co. livery stables were now in that side of the building.
